New Treatment Option for Hemorrhoids now Available at The Iowa Clinic

Dr. Michael Page is the first surgeon in the U.S. to offer treatment option

Nearly half of the population will have hemorrhoids by the age of 50.  Hemorrhoids are common in both men and women and are very common during pregnancy.  They can result from increased pressure of the anus, causing veins to bulge and expand.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids include:

  • Itching
  • Pain, especially while sitting
  • Bright red blood on toilet tissue and in stool

A new less traumatic and less invasive treatment option for hemorrhoids is now available at The Iowa Clinic.  Michael J. Page, MD, FASC, FASCRS, is the first physician in the United States offering Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD). THD treats the blood vessels to the hemorrhoid placing internal stitches in an area lacking any pain receptors.  This is much different than traditional surgical techniques that require tissue to be removed.

Other benefits of THD include:

  • Outpatient procedure allowing the patient to go home hours after the procedure and resume normal activity within 24 – 48 hours
  • Reduction of pain

Traditional techniques include the Milligan-Morgan technique and the Ferguson technique.  The Milligan-Morgan technique, also known as an open hemorrhoidectomy, dissects the hemorrhoidal tissue and leaves three triangular-shaped wounds at the end of the procedure.
