The Iowa Clinic Pathology Department focuses on the branch of medical science that studies the causes, nature and effects of diseases. Pathology is dated as one of the oldest medical disciplines and is literally defined as the study of disease where specialized physicians or pathologists work to derive information from laboratory tests and tissue specimens. This process includes the clinical examination of organs, tissues and bodily fluids. Although uncommon for patients to see pathologists directly, they serve as close consultations to other physicians.
