Proactively Keeping Patients First

During the 1992 U.S. presidential campaign, Bill Clinton campaigned heavily on healthcare reform. In 1993, the Health Security Act was introduced, debated, and ultimately defeated. But discussions surrounding healthcare reform continued. To a core group of forward-thinking Des Moines-area physicians, this signaled a need to dramatically change how they were doing business if they were to continue providing the highest quality of care.

This group began discussing ways they could ensure central Iowa a future of affordable, accessible, exceptional healthcare. By 1994, the number of interested doctors had grown to over 100, who united as The Iowa Clinic. This positioned them to enhance collaboration and coordination of care across specialties. The Iowa Clinic’s 20-year legacy of providing patient-centric care through a physician-owned, physician- governed entity began.

Affordable Care Act & The Iowa Clinic

With this year’s implementation of the Affordable Care Act, we’re seeing the greatest shift of our lifetime in how Americans receive healthcare. Not surprisingly, The Iowa Clinic physicians are again proactively working to ensure that patients throughout central Iowa continue to get the high-quality care they depend on, when they need it.

  • In the past three years, The Iowa Clinic has grown to have more than 170 physicians and healthcare providers practicing in 38 specialties. We’ve made a commitment to expand primary care by adding Family Medicine and Pediatrics, and by opening several new clinics in the communities closer to where our consumers live and work.
  • To make primary care more accessible, The Iowa Clinic offers same-day and next-day appointments with Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatric providers, Monday through Friday.
  • Patients are now able to make appointments, get test results, refill prescriptions, communicate with their provider, and more using MyHealth, an online tool that puts healthcare at their fingertips.

Better, Not Necessarily Bigger

The Iowa Clinic’s continual growth and expansion of services have occurred not because we want to be bigger, but because we want to be better by always putting our patients first.

Our culture is deeply rooted in being Able, Available, Affordable, Affable, and Adaptable. These five A’s drive every decision we make, and our success in each area is routinely and rigorously tested through surveys. Our physicians are accountable for providing the best quality care and customer service.

The growth we’ve experienced over our 20- year history is a statement of commitment. It says we are going to be in central Iowa for the long haul, and that we want to be an effective partner with our patients as well as with other healthcare providers, the government, our payers, and employers.
