Schedule Your Child's Back to School Physical Now
on Thursday, June 7, 2018
Indianola Family Medicine physician, Dr. Yulia Johnson talks about the importance of scheduling your kid's back to school physical early in the summer.
With the school year coming to an end, no kid wants to start thinking about August and the next school year. But it is a good idea to start thinking about back to school physicals now. You don't have to wait until late July/early August for pre-participation sports physicals. Sports physicals are valid for 12 months – so if your child has a sports physical in June 2018, it will be valid through June 2019.
Sports physicals are performed to avoid problems before they occur. Your doctor will check the athlete for signs and symptoms of potentially dangerous heart and lung problems, but that's not all. It's also important to assess athletes for injuries they may have sustained during the past school year.
It's important to get pre-participation physicals done early. As providers, one of our least favorite things is holding back a young athlete while we confirm that a heart murmur isn't anything to worry about or wait for an injury to heal properly. Getting physicals done early in the summer allows doctors to complete any testing that might be necessary, and lets the athlete complete physical therapy that might be needed for nagging injuries.
Pre-participation physicals are also a great opportunity to update vaccinations that might be needed for the school year or before your child heads off to college. Any other concerns that you or your child might be having can be discussed during a physical as well.
