The Obstetricians at The Iowa Clinic deliver babies at three area hospitals: Methodist West, Unity Point-Des Moines (formerly Iowa Methodist), and Mercy Medical Center. But recently, they've seen a big increase in expectant parents who choose the maternity center at Methodist West Hospital, 1660 60th St. in West Des Moines.
For Eric and Carey Roeder of Norwalk, delivering their three youngest children (all by C-section) at Methodist West provided some big advantages. For one, it was easy for out-of-town relatives to get to and from I-35/80. For another, spacious rooms let grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, and friends ooh and aah at Baby without having to huddle.
Most of all, says Carey, “The staff is genuine and real, and makes me feel so secure. I guess the best way to describe Methodist West is that it's comfortable in every way. We absolutely loved it there.”
Carey's Obstetrician is Perry Osborn, D.O., one of 11 OB/GYN physicians with The Iowa Clinic. He says, “Last year, our group did just shy of 600 deliveries at Methodist West. That's roughly 40 percent of our total deliveries in 2013.”
He adds, “You might think Methodist West caters to individuals in West Des Moines, but we have patients who come from Indianola, Norwalk, Ankeny, Bondurant, and other communities.”
Dr. Osborn attributes Methodist West's rise in popularity to several factors:
- Specialized neonatal care. A neonatologist or neonatal nurse, who specializes in caring for newborns, is present at every delivery. “While I'm taking care of Mom, someone who is very well trained is taking care of Baby,” says Osborn. “Even though only a tiny percentage of deliveries require neonatal care, it's readily available.”
- On-site anesthesiologist. “When a patient needs pain relief, the time it takes for an anesthesiologist to administer an epidural is extremely fast,” Osborn says.
- Beautiful, serene environment. In addition to being a newer facility, the 12 spacious birthing suites include pull-out sleeping couches for family and friends, flat screen televisions, DVD/CD players, and whirlpool tubs. “It doesn't feel like you're in a baby factory,” Carey says. “You feel like you're the only ones there, even though there are multiple people on the floor with you.”
- Easy access. Located just blocks from the I-35/80 interchange in West Des Moines, Methodist West has plenty of parking just steps from the hospital door.
“Des Moines is fortunate to have several great places to deliver your baby — parents can choose the one that best meets their needs,” says Osborn. “The Iowa Clinic is happy to provide care at three of them.”
