Scott Hamling, M.D., a General Surgeon with The Iowa Clinic, led the effort that culminated in John Stoddard Cancer Center earning recognition as one of the nation's top breast cancer care centers. Breast Surgeons at The Iowa Clinic have long known that care for breast cancer patients at John Stoddard Cancer Center rivals that of any other breast care program in the nation. The fact has now been proven: John Stoddard Cancer Center recently became the first in central Iowa to be granted the three-year full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer (NAPBC), aprogram administered by the American College of Surgeons.
This accreditation ensures that patients with breast cancer had access to:
- The most comprehensive care and state-of-the-art services available
- Individualized treatment plans coordinated across multiple specialties: Radiologists, Pathologists, Oncologists, Breast Surgeons, Genetic Counselors, Plastic Surgeons, Nutrition Counselors, Care Coordinators and more
- Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
- Top-quality breast care close to home
Dr. Hamling chairs the John Stoddard Cancer Center Breast Program Leadership team. He says, “The physicians at The Iowa Clinic Women's Center care for a significant number of patients with breast cancer, and Surgeons at The Iowa Clinic provide a wide spectrum of oncological surgery performed at John Stoddard.
We knew our patients were getting great care, but we didn't know if we were providing it in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. So we went to work to collect and measure the data.”With that information in hand, the Breast Program Leadership team was able to quantify the number of breast cancer patients who received each type of therapy, the efficiency with which treatments were administered, patient outcomes, and more.
The NAPBC then conducted a rigorous on-site review of center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement. “They evaluated the proficiency of everything we do and compared to our results to national standards. This showed that breast cancer at John Stoddard is above and beyond any benchmarks that have been set nationally,” says Hamling. “We hit the ball out of the park and earned a 100-percent, across-the-board certification.
This validates all the work of those involved in the care of patients with breast disease at the John Stoddard Cancer Center and wouldn't be possible without a coordinated effort across multiple groups and specialties,” Hamling says. “We didn't have to change the way we care for our patients, we just needed to gather and present out results.
The numbers speak for themselves.” Hamling says women throughout central Iowa should find comfort in knowing they don't have to leave home to receive state-of-the-art breast care that is delivered efficiently and cost effectively. “Every aspect of the care they receive right here, at John Stoddard, compares favorably with the best breast cancer programs anywhere in the United States,” he says.
