The HET (hemorrhoid energy therapy) system is a quick, five-minute procedure designed to treat internal hemorrhoids with bleeding or prolapse.
New technology at The Iowa Clinic gets rid of hemorrhoids once and for all.
A 48-year-old patient — let's call her Laura — has battled constipation most of her life. As if that weren't bothersome enough, the constipation caused hemorrhoids, which are irritating, often burn, and can bleed. On October 9, Michael Page, M.D., a Colorectal Surgeon with The Iowa Clinic, used the new HET system to remove Laura's hemorrhoids for good.
In the past, Laura had repeated-but-unsuccessful band ligations, which involve placing rubber bands around the hemorrhoids every three or four weeks until they should die and fall off. “Band ligation works well and is pretty painless, but it's a nuisance,” says Dr. Page.
Conversely, the HET (hemorrhoid energy therapy) system is a quick, five-minute procedure designed to treat internal hemorrhoids with bleeding or prolapse (protruding outside the anal sphincter). It takes about 10 seconds to treat one hemorrhoid, making it possible to treat all existing hemorrhoids during a single outpatient procedure using a short general anesthetic.
“I'm amazed,” Laura says. “Within a day of having this procedure, I was normal. The way I went to the bathroom was normal — I no longer felt like I had a stopper keeping things inside! There were no side effects and no pain. I was back working at my desk the next day. “I had thought (having hemorrhoids) was just going to be my life,” she says. But when Laura had her follow-up visit with Dr. Page a month after surgery, he told her, “It's gone. Everything's gone,” she says.
