Our internal medicine physicians, also known as internists, take care of your general healthcare needs while also specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases. Internal Medicine Specialties

While The Iowa Clinic’s internal medicine physicians are knowledgeable in all your general healthcare needs, many of our internists also provide in-depth specialized care for adults. Some of the health conditions our internal medicine doctors can diagnose and treat, include:

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Diabetes

Our internists can also identify and treat certain cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), deep vein thrombosis and more. In the event your doctor is unable to treat a certain condition, they can refer you to a specialist who can.

Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Services & Treatments

Some internal medicine doctors coordinate care for medical conditions that begin at an early age and last throughout their patients’ lives. These physicians, also known as med-peds, treat health conditions in adults that stem from certain health events that occurred in childhood.

Examples of conditions that a med-peds physician might treat include:

  • Certain conditions related to childhood heart defects or heart disease
  • All stages of cystic fibrosis and any complications it brings as a person ages
  • Follow-up care for pediatric cancer survivors and their health needs
