After menopause, when estrogen levels decline, as many as 50% of women suffer from changes in their vaginal health that impact their quality of life, but only 25% of them seek help from their doctors.
The MonaLisa Touch® is a new fractional CO2 laser therapy for vaginal health. It delivers gentle laser energy to the vaginal wall tissue that stimulates a healing response by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization. A typical course of treatment is three procedures over 18 weeks.
Treatment is non-hormonal and is appropriate for any female suffering from issues from a decline in estrogen, as well as those who are experiencing symptoms as a result of a hysterectomy or breast cancer treatments.
What Should I Expect
MonaLisa Touch® is an in-office procedure that requires no anesthesia. The procedure will seem similar to your annual exam and will take less than five minutes. The provider will insert the laser into your vagina and deliver laser energy pulses.
These pulses stimulate dormant fibrocytes changing them into fibroblasts. The fibroblast cells in the skin to promote natural regeneration processes. This stimulates collagen formation underneath the vaginal skin, promotes proliferation of the cells and restoration of blood supply. After treatment, there is regeneration of new tissue in the vaginal walls and the protective mucosa recovers volume, hydration and elasticity.
The laser energy itself is virtually painless. Some patients report mild discomfort with the laser tip insertion during the first procedure if there is gynecologic dryness.
By restoring the natural pH balance of the vaginal mucosa, and targeting the causes of vaginal atrophy, many of the symptoms such as vaginal dryness, irritation and fissuring are greatly reduced or disappear - all with virtually no side effects or discomfort.
In both European and U.S. clinical trials, women reported symptom relief after the very first treatment and even greater improvement after the second and third treatment.
Patients should refrain from sexual activity for two-three days. Your doctor will determine a post-procedure regimen that is right for you.
A once-a-year single treatment is recommended to maintain symptom relief.* This can be done quickly and conveniently during your annual checkup.
*Your doctor will determine with you if follow up treatments are required.
