Des Moines Radiologist | Medical Imaging

The Iowa Clinic Radiology Department utilizes medical imaging to gain important information about the body. Diagnostic testing available at The Iowa Clinic includes general adult and pediatric radiology, CT scan, bone density scan, full body scan, cardiac calcium scoring, mammogram, stereotactic breast biopsy, CAD, ultrasound and CT guided biopsy, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine including PET scan.

When Should I have a Mammogram?

Yearly screening mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health. If you notice any changes with either breast, or have a family history of breast cancer, you should consult your primary care provider to determine whether you should have a screening mammogram before the age of 40.

Digital Mammography

Digital mammography is superior at detecting breast cancer. During a mammogram a low-dose x-ray is taken to produce detailed images of the breast allowing the radiologist to look for changes in breast tissue that cannot be felt during a breast exam. A certified mammography technologist will take the x-ray images of the breast and a board-certified radiologist will examine the images to look for lumps and calcifications. A report will be issued to your primary healthcare provider and a letter will be sent to you summarizing the results. Should further evaluation be necessary, you will be contacted either by medical imaging or your primary care provider.

3D Mammography

Breast tomosynthesis, often referred to as 3D mammography, is a new technology that converts digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers to build a three dimensional mammogram. 3D mammography is most beneficial for women with:
Dense breast tissue per mammographic image
Patients with a greater than 20% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer per risk evaluation
Certain patients who have had an abnormal mammogram

3D mammography is slightly higher in radiation than the standard 2D mammogram. Although 3D mammography may help to reduce the amount of call backs, there will still be call backs with follow up ultrasounds if needed.

Patient Stories

Two Weeks from Diagnosis to Surgery

Like many women, West Des Moines’ Courtney Bell, 35, didn’t perform the recommended monthly self-exams on her breasts. But on a Saturday morning in October 2013, something told her she should. https://youtu.be/q2EnBDMMb4M “I was changing the batteries in my smoke detectors and thought, ‘What else should I be doing?’” she says. She headed to her bedroom, stood in front of the mirror, and checked her breasts. She felt a grape-like lump in her right breast.…

When Doctors are Connected

When communication between medical professionals works like a well-oiled machine, patients’ diagnosis is faster. Getting in to see the right specialists is faster. And getting on the road to recovery is, well, faster. Trisha Joseph’s story is a perfect example. When Trisha Joseph, 35, of West Des Moines arrived at The Iowa Clinic Urgent Care last April, she knew the pain in her stomach wasn’t normal. What she didn’t know was that – less than…
