The general surgeons at The Iowa Clinic are trained to perform a variety of procedures, including surgery for complex conditions. Many of the procedures can be done laparoscopically, meaning only a few small incisions are made. Our surgeons are trained in the latest techniques, including robotic-assisted surgery using the state-of- the-art da Vinci surgical system. With da Vinci robotic surgery, surgical procedures are less invasive and patients often have a faster recovery.

Many Iowa Clinic physicians and surgeons care for a significant number of patients at John Stoddard Cancer Center and one of our general surgeons, Scott Hamling, MD, led the effort to help the Cancer Center earn a three-year full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. John Stoddard was the first in Central Iowa to earn recognition as one of the nation’s top breast cancer centers. Dr. Hamling and a team of colleagues support the Surgical Breast Clinic, a special clinic for patients battling breast cancer, that takes a multidisciplinary approach when recommending the best course of treatment.
